The Best Paraben Free Moisturizers at a Glance:

Why Switch to Paraben Free Moisturizers?

Over the last couple years, I’ve been on a journey to create a better, cleaner makeup, skincare, and beauty routine.

It’s honestly sickening to read about all the harmful ingredients and chemicals that many companies and brands have in their products, and it’s even more sickening that the U.S. doesn’t have better regulations in place.

Though it’s taken some time, I’ve been carefully swapping out products and making switches to healthier beauty, skincare, and makeup products.

One ingredient that I for sure knew I wanted to stop using in my skincare and beauty products is Parabens.

Best Paraben Free Moisturizers – Parabens FAQ’s

You’ve probably heard of parabens in the beauty world, but maybe you’re not completely familiar with what parabens are, what products they’re in, and why it’s best to avoid them.

That’s why I put together this helpful Parabens FAQ’s so that you can better understand what parabens are, why they’re harmful to our skin and bodies, and why you should make the switch to paraben free moisturizers and paraben free beauty products.

What are parabens?

Parabens are a synthetic preservative chemical added to cosmetics to prevent mold and bacterial growth, and prolong the shelf life of ingredients in products.

Although you might think they are a new creation, parabens have been around since the 1950s.

What type of products have parabens?

Parabens unfortunately are extremely common in beauty and self care products, and are even sometimes used in food preservatives.

You will most typically find parabens in products with a high water content such as hair products like shampoo and conditioner, lotions, facial creams, shaving creams, toothpaste, and mouthwash.

What are the most common parabens?

Parabens can appear in products in several ingredient forms, but the parabens most commonly used in cosmetics are:

  • methylparaben
  • propylparaben
  • butylparaben
  • ethylparaben
  • isobutylparaben
  • isopropylparaben
  • benzylparaben
Are parabens bad for the skin and body? Should we avoid them?

Whether or not parabens are safe for use, is often a heated debate, however there’s been enough research found over the last several decades to prove it’s unsafe.

While we don’t yet know the full impact and long-term effects that parabens has on our bodies, we do know enough to conclude that yes, parabens are bad and they should be avoided.

As xenoestrogens (aka estrogen mimickers) parabens directly impact the hormonal functions of the body and can cause hormonal imbalances linked with cancer formations and infertility.

Just in the last 20 years alone, parabens have been linked to health risks to include:

  • Breast Cancer
  • Reproductive Issues
  • Skin Sensitives/Allergies
  • Ecological Harm

Scary, right?

How can I avoid using parabens in beauty products?

Read your ingredients and avoid using any products with a -paraben ingredient.

Parabens are often sneakily added to what you might assume would be a natural or clean beauty product, so do your due diligence in reading your ingredients and choosing products without parabens in them.

I also recommend switching to healthier alternatives when possible.

It might take more time to read ingredients and you might have to spend a little extra $$, but avoiding all the harmful effects is WELL WORTH IT.

Plus, I’m really happy to see a lot more drugstore beauty brands and affordable skincare brands starting to create more paraben free products.

How can I identify parabens in ingredient list?

In general, it’s best to avoid any ingredient ending in -paraben (methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, isobutylparaben, isopropylparaben, benzylparaben)

What are safer alternatives to parabens?

Sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, and phenoxyethanol are three lab-made preservatives that are EWG (environmental working group) approved.

What to Consider Before Buying a Paraben Free Moisturizer

Double-check the ingredients:

ALWAYS read your ingredients to ensure the product you are ordering doesn’t contain any harmful or irritating ingredients.

It’s especially important to read your ingredients carefully if you have any allergens or sensitivities.

And just because it is paraben free doesn’t mean it is necessarily “clean” so make sure you check for other additives such as fragrance or formaldehyde.

Choose a moisturizer for your skin type and skin needs:

When it comes to selecting any skincare product, it’s important to choose something that will work with your skin type and your skin’s needs.

Most products now list what skin types and skin concern’s their product addresses, so read carefully to ensure you get a moisturizer that will work best for YOU.

And thankfully, I categorized all of these best paraben free moisturizers according to skin type to make it even easier! 🙂

Check for Expiration Dates:

One thing to keep in mind when ordering a paraben-free moisturizer is that the product will have a shorter shelf life, so it’s important to check for expiration dates when purchasing.

If you are unsure if you will be able to use up all of the product before it expires, you can always opt for a smaller ounce size or even a travel size version.
